not happy with the new changes

I tried these for two weeks and returned them. I didn't like them because the upper on the Torin 9 was too small, but the addition of a Vibram DuraDura rubber sole and P35X foam was awesome. Altra should've kept the upper from Torin 8 and added the Vibram Dura rubber sole and P35x foam for the new Torin, in my opinion.

Great Shoe as a New Runner

I have started to enjoy running outside and decided to train for a marathon. I have had these shoes a few weeks now and I love them. I don't have a lot of experience to compare these to other shoes for running, however they are are light and comfortable. I have been running in them 4-5 times a week as a daily runner and they are superb. Feel cushy enough in my 5-7 mile days so far. The mid foot area is tighter then i would expect but feels great as my foot doesn't slip while still leaving room for my toes to spread out. I have run in 90+ degree weather here in NC and I have never thought about my feet feeling hot. The soles feel grippy. I love them and will eventually get another par.

Phenomenal Altra Torin 9

Picked these up from my favorite local shop Louisiana Running and Walking Company. Initial fit a and feel was excellent, size 12, which indeed means these run very slightly small. Occasionally I can fit in an 11. 5. Very very springy midsole. After walking a couple laps around the block I decided to risk it a go for a long run on Sunday morning, 17. 6 miles later after my Tour de New Orleans, I am only more impressed. After a decade long love affair with Altra, these may indeed be my favorite Altras to date.

Great shoes, bad website

I was a true Hoka loyalist for a long time. Then Altras were recommended to me after getting orthotics for my flat feet. I wore Lone Peak 9’s on a 3 day, 50 mile hike on the PCT. My feet were about the only thing that did not hurt, thanks to my Altras!

I have ran in Torin since the 4. This shoe is the best Torin ever by far!!! Just the right amount of cushion also I like the grip and also they improved the heel.
I was just amazed at how much improvement was made in this shoe.

I’m pleasantly surprised. I was trying Altra again because every shoe now has too much pronation control. Either the medial side of the footbed is raised or the shoe has annoying arch support. I find these features very distracting. Altra has always felt very neutral.
The Torin 9 has that neutral feeling and the foam is firm and responsive. I was worried it would be too soft and my heel would sink down to a negative drop, but that was not the case. I would say that this shoe is noticeably firmer than the Experience Flow 3 and a little bit firmer than the Flow 2. I like a firmer shoe, especially if it’s zero drop, and this Torin has the perfect density for my taste. The foam is responsive too. It has more toe spring than other Altras which has made the transition very smooth, but may not work for those looking for a minimal shoe.
The fit is a little shorter than other Altras I’ve owned recently, maybe due to the toe spring. I normally wear a 10 in Altra, and a 10. 5 in Saucony, Brooks, and Puma. I got a 10 here and it’s a little short, it still works. The outsole is great but noisy indoors, I’m hoping that gets better as the rubber breaks in. I think this would be a great trail shoe too. It’s stable and the rubber has a lot of bite. If this shoe had a 4mm drop I’d like it even more.

We are back. . . with caveats

First the pros:
P35 foam is infinitely superior to Ego and happy they are finally ditching it. I'd been running in the Experience Flow 2 for a year now and knew how much better P35 is as a foam.
Vibram outsole - having it on a road shoe is a fantastic addition because you can breathe on Altra's current outsoles and they will wear down.
Stripped down the over engineering of the 8. That thing was a heavy mess.
Very light and speedy feeling shoe.
Cons:
I don't even have a wide foot and these "standard" fit feel as tight as Nike's. My foot can't splay.
The tongue material is a bit annoying and can bunch.
SIZING. Altra, what last are you using? I never believe people when they say size up so I ordered my usual 10. 5. Way too small. Sized up to an 11 and it's good, but I've run the gamut between 10 to 11 from them over the years.
Overall:
Amazingly close to the GOAT (4. 5) so stock up everyone because they only get this model right every 4 to 5 years

Almost there, but still falling short

I've been with Altra probably since the Lone Peak 2's and have tried a variety of shoes from them spanning from trail to road. The one continuous theme with Altra is that they just always seem to fall short whether (and usually) quality issues, fit issues, or underwhelming foams--and that's how I feel about the Torin 9's. I'll start by saying that for the most part this shoe is awesome--great fit, great step in feel, vibram rubber, and the foam is miles ahead from the Torin 7's foam. However, I feel the same way as when I tried the Escalante 3's. The foam has a very little give to it, and then it just feels like a dead, firm brick of foam underneath that give causing a firm/harsh ride. I would like to see how this foam breaks in, but I don't have the financial luxury to *hope* that the foam gets better. I think if there was 1-2mm more of stack and the foam just a having a little more of that springy energy return, then this shoe would be a 5/5 (for me). I don't normally write reviews but I'm writing this because Altra has a special place in my heart. With almost every shoe that I've bought over the years, I feel like they're always just missing that one thing. I keep thinking they'll dial it in sooner or later, but I always feel let down. Will continue to stick around and overall Altra has been heading in a better direction over the years.
