Great jacket but...

This is a great jacket from a build perspective, but there are some quirks about it (yes, I'm picky about what I wear on my body). For example, the hand pockets are deep, however they only insulate the upper 3/4 of the pocket (copper version). The lower 1/4 of the pocket (where your hands normally sit) is not insulated at all (tested standing in -10C with 40kmh gust for 30 mins). Not sure why Columbia would do this. It doesn't make sense. Then there is the warmth aspect - its too warm and doesn't breath well. They used the new infinity omni heat shield material (gold foil) throughout the whole sleeve. This makes your arms sweat. Usually omni heat material only covers the torso for a reason. I read some reviews of this coat that were accurate: it's very warm, however sometimes too warm and you need to vent the coat before sweat starts dripping down your back. But you can't vent your arms. So there is no "breathing" aspect here - only by unzipping. Then there is the sizing. I normally wear a large. So I initially got a large but it felt more like an XL. So I had to return it and get a medium. Again, doesn't make sense why a company that makes coats would vary so widely in their sizing, unless they outsource coat design/build to various different manufacturers and lack quality control. It's not that hard to measure your arm length and ensure that large = x inches across all coats. What's the point of having a sizing chart if the sizes don't match the chart? Finally, pockets or lack thereof (more of a reflection on Columbia as a whole). I had to look through dozens of coats to find a coat that has hand, wallet, and cellphone pockets. This jacket has all the pockets, albeit somewhat poorly positioned (cellphone pocket right in top of wallet makes them bulge out). Overall, I give this jacket 4 stars because of these flaws, yet jacket build and structure quality are solid and I can see this jacket lasting a long time. I wouldn't buy this jacket at full price, sale price was really good.

Nice, warm jacket!

I live in the central part of North Dakota close to the Canada border and the winters here get absolutely brutal. I was looking for an everyday wear jacket that would block wind and keep me warm in the 0 to -60 degree weather. This jacks does a good job! Not much wind makes it through and the warmth is surprising. Pockets are nice and insulated also keeping the hands warm. The hood is nice and does a good job of keeping the head, ears, and mouth/nose warm. The drawcords for the hood are also internal so if you cinch the hood down you have a minimal amount of the cord sticking out of the jacket flapping around and the release mechanism is inside the edge of the hood near the cheeks. The coldest temp I’ve worn it in so far was -12 ambient and -36 with wind chill. All I had on under it was a crewneck sweatshirt and I was plenty warm! Only complaint is there is a place on the sleeves around the topside of the elbow that seems to be a different fabric or may not have as much down insulation and it develops a cold spot there on the arm. Price and the cold spot on the top of forearm/elbow area are the only reasons I’m not giving it a full 5 star review. Overall, great jacket!
