Just tape it with electrical tape if it cracks?

The one I bought doesn't have any cracked plastic ..... If it does start to crack , I will get black electrical tape and wrap the tape around it... Don't trust Any lock to keep your bike from theft, especially in a secluded bike room at apartment, theirs break into those rooms in the middle of the night, and have lots of time to cut locks.... Keep your bike in your home, in your room.... A lock is false sense of security.....but if you are going in the store, or something...lock it in a visible area.. and don't leave it for too long.... Thieves have bolt cutter, Angle grinders, freezing techniques.... Saws....

Plastic covering breaks off

I bought this lock and the entire plastic casing was cracked. Returned it and very lock on the rack was the same… it would scratch you paint. Buyer beware!
