From a hardware standpoint, it’s almost my ideal fitness watch. I love the rugged design, round display, physical buttons, battery life, and overall build quality. The running and training capabilities are also excellent—Garmin gives you an incredible amount of useful data during and after workouts.
Unfortunately, the software experience doesn’t match the quality of the hardware. The UI on the watch genuinely feels like it’s stuck in the early 2000s. Menus are cluttered, navigation isn’t always intuitive, and the overall visual design feels surprisingly dated for such an expensive, technologically advanced watch.
Garmin Connect has a similar problem. There’s an enormous amount of useful information available, but it isn’t presented nearly as cleanly or intuitively as something like WHOOP. Garmin often gives me more data, while WHOOP does a much better job of making that data easy to understand.
That’s what makes the Fēnix 8 so frustrating: Garmin has almost everything I want. The hardware, battery life, durability, and training features are fantastic. I just wish the software felt as premium and modern as the watch itself.
I really wanted to love the Garmin Fēnix 8.
Amazing hardware and incredible training capabilities held back by desperately outdated UI/UX.

It’s a nice watch. The watch faces provided by Garmin for this watch suck! There are some other free ones that you might like, I did find an acceptable one. Most of the available watch faces are from third parties and are not free. For the price of this watch you should be able to easily get a free watch face that you like. They also don’t make it easy to find out that you will likely have to pay for a watch face that suits you.

So I have been with GARMIN for 20 years and before this Fenix 8 now. I loved my Fenix 6 pro solar and after 5 1/2 years the battery was done. So I hope my Fenix 8 can go at least 7 years.
