Very fun

I've owned a few vivoactives, and they are great, but the 970 is a pretty significant step up. The training readiness and sleep tracking features are awesome, and the multi-band GPS is great at quickly and accurately monitoring both my location and pace, which were the areas I was hoping to improve most. A sneaky helpful feature for me is using the Garmin coach and the watch actually visualizing the exercises that it wants me to perform. No more going off to YouTube to figure it out. Overall this is exceeding expectations.

Neat way to track and watch

Great watch and tracker. Setup got me flustered at first but made sense after just a bit of clicking and watching a YouTube video. Great medium price point versus the fenix. Looks sleek and great video screen on the dial.

Glad I came back to the Garmin family

I have been using Apple Watches for quite a while, and just cutting active calories it posts by 25% to get a reasonable number for what I actually burned. I use cycling computers with power meters and have compared the data to apple data to arrive at this number. Adjust it slightly depending on how hard the activity is. My last Apple Watch was getting flaky so I sprung for the 970 as I recently purchased a garmin edge 850 to replace a dead Wahoo bolt. I was loving the seamless integration of the 850 to garmin connect and the increase in the data available. So I sprung for the 970 and am amazed how close it gets on cycling calories compared to the 850 tied to the power meter. Again, ride intensity affects the accuracy, but always within 10% which is fantastic for a heart rate based only device. I also noticed the 970 watch gave walking and hiking calories much closer to my expectation, though I believe it is low on strength training calories. BUT, the ability to track strength training reps and weights by exercise real time on the watch is fantastic. I am knocking it down one star because of a couple of glitches I have had and the difficulty level garmin still imposes on users to change data fields. It is huge, but I have large wrists so not too bad. Amazingly, it is much lighter than Apple Watches (apple post weight of watch only, not the band included as garmin does). All in all, quite satisfied with the switch from apple but still learning the new system.

Very light weights almost nothing, great amoled display. It takes some time to get use to the menu compared to my epix pro

Upgraded from the forerunner 55 to the forerunner 970 a month ago and all I can say is wow. Imagine going from a 1984 Toyota Corolla to a 2027 Lamborghini sto. I was concerned mainly about the overall larger size of the watch but from day one it’s felt like it fits perfectly I use the flashlight daily the navigation is a life savor on the trails I’m not easy on equipment and I see this watch holding up just fine for a long time to come. Bite the bullet spend the money and never look back. Amazing.

Fenix vs 979 vs Apple Watch

I was looking for the full Garmin Fenix experience without the weight penalty of a steel or titanium case, and this watch delivered exactly that. The sapphire crystal was the deciding factor for me—no more constantly replacing screen protectors that get scratched and within weeks. Coming from a Garmin 255 a few years ago and an Apple Watch 10 more recently, the difference is night and day. I no longer have to charge my watch every single day, and the running data and insights in Garmin Connect are genuinely outstanding. The depth of metrics, recovery insights, and training tools far exceed what I was getting from Strava. Pro tip: Skip the Strava subscription. Just get a Garmin. The free Connect app already gives you significantly more detailed and actionable stats than Strava provides. Yes, it’s on the expensive side, but for the build quality, battery life, and training intelligence you get, this watch is absolutely worth it. Highly recommended if you want premium performance without unnecessary bulk.

I love my Forerunner 970. My sons are the ones that pushed me to get one. I’m so glad they did. I’m amazed at the amount of info it tells me about my exercise and health. Love that it doesn’t need charging everyday. I definitely will not be going back to Apple.
