I have several Merrill’s, the agility peak has been my go to for the last few years. I live in Moab ( yes that Moab), and run and hike in rough terrain. I need a big toe box, aggressive tread and have both the GTX and regular style. I buy a half size up to a 9.5 but decided to go up another half size to accommodate my thicker socks.
Big mistake, although I have a good fit, my heel constantly slips which can be quite uncomfortable, allowing small rocks in my shoe. I do put another insert in because I need the extra padding. I don’t know quite what to do about the heel slippage. Otherwise I really like this style. I’m not crazy about the color, I usually wait for the sales and i ended up with black this time but color doesn’t make the shoe.
Merrill I’m still open to being a shoe tester 😉

Nice shoe but BOA won’t work for me.

These are nice and I tried to make them work. They are very light weight and oh, so comfy! I had to return them because the BOA style wasn’t wide enough. The BOA opening was too tight for the widest part of my foot. So I bought a non waterproof pair with the laces. They are way roomier and more comfortable for my feet. Too bad, because I wanted the gore tex and BOA system. Worked out, though. Merrell is wonderful with returns.

Comfy! But not as wide as normal Agility Peak 5's!

They are extremely comfy, but fit tighter in the toe box than the non-Gortex Agility Peak 5's. They took a bit to break in, where the normal Agility Peak 5' were instant love and never a problem. This is my second pair of Agility Peak's (first Gortex for winter). My last pair saw over 500km (some days were 25-30 km) of travel and was still pretty comfy.
PROS:
- Amazing grip
- Very stable on Vancouver Island trails (rocky, rooty, uneven, and normal gravel trails/logging roads)
- Good feel when running, similar to non Gortex
- Waterproof
CONS:
- I found that after a couple runs I have water coming in on the right side outer toe box. Not sure if a factory flaw?
- Not tested on major scrambles
- Narrower toe box than the normal Agility Peak 5's
- Sometimes get sore ankles from uneven trails/side hilling (also could be because im on km 22 of my trek...)
I think I will stick to just the normal Agility Peak's next time, as the waterproof feature isn't enough of a selling feature.
