Poor Design & cutting corners

This may seem like a minor complaint, but I removed the laces from my boot to clean them after a hiking trip. Trying to insert the laces through the leather tabs was very difficult and very frustrating. Previous pairs had metal eyelets, which made it easy to remove and reinsert the laces. A cost cutting measure to save a few bucks. If I could I would return these boots. I've only had the boots for less than a month. I could quickly determine that these boots do not provide the support that I need

Very good hiking boot

I got these to do the Camino de Santiago from Sarria to Campostella. I wore these exclusively, even though I brought a pair of hiking shoes to swap every day. I ended up just using these for the entire Camino. Positives: Great waterproofing, it rained every day and my feet stayed dry; awesome ankle support - I've got weak ankles; arch support was good; I was one of few people who got no blisters or had any issues with their feet. Negative: The laces would not stay tied - I had to double knot them; going downhill the back of the shoe rubbed against the back of my achilles tendon a bit - it was hard to keep them tight for ankle support and walk downhill. Overall, I liked these boots a lot, I would rate them more like a 4.5 than just a straight 4.

Horrible Experience

This was my 6th or 7th pair of Salomon hiking shoes over the past 20 years, and unfortunately it will be my last. One of the reasons I kept buying Salomon was that I never had to “break them in.” Every previous pair felt comfortable right out of the box, as if I’d been wearing them for years. This pair was completely different. After only two hikes, the left shoe started pressing painfully against the side of my foot. The pain became so severe during a hike in Rocky Mountain National Park that I could barely finish the trail. I ended up switching to my water shoes, which wasn’t ideal for hiking, but at least they didn’t hurt. Fortunately, Estes Park has several great outdoor gear shops, so I bought a pair of Merrell Moab hikers. So far, they’ve been comfortable from the start, with no issues at all. I’m disappointed because Salomon used to be my go-to hiking shoe, but something has changed, and based on this experience, I won’t be buying another pair.

Great out of the box

I tested these right out of the box on a 7 mile day hike in the Appalachian Mountains. The boots gripped well as I fished off a steep rock face. They did great on all surfaces and my feet are not sore, these could be the best pair of backpacking boots I have ever bought. My feet are wide and the Quest 5s have a nice wide toe box. I will be doing a lot of multi-day backpacking trips this summer. I’m looking forward to see how these perform.

Solomon Quest

Absolutely superb. I used Solomon Quest to hike Pikes Peak, Grand Canyon Rim to Rim, etc. This is an impressive boot; I have never had a blister or even severe hot spot. The biggest challenge is breaking in; i had almost 40 miles on one pair before they got really comfortable. I recommend start breaking in slow, and, don't push the limit until comfortable. Happy Hiking.
