The Alloy Pocket Trowel is a durable, lightweight and compact backpacking trowel. The handle retracts into the blade to save space in your backpack and extends to the same length as the ideal ‘cathole’ depth. It's the perfect tool for practicing Leave No Trace principles in the backcountry and is made from a lightweight and strong 6066-T6 aluminum alloy.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I didn't get a chance to use it yet, but it takes up very little space in my backpack. I wanted a metal scoop that didn't take up space. This fit the bill. Only thing I find as a negative is the cap to the storage in the handle is tricky to open.

Handy and capable in the High Sierra

Have been using this for several years in the granite and volcanic soils of the Sierra and cascades. Makes quick work of scratching a cat hole. Lighter than a steel folding trowel and tougher than a plastic one. 5 star kit!

Would like a titanium version

Love this trowel, I roll up a mini-roll of backup TP in the handle. I've actually owned this for 10 years. I've been replacing my gear with lighter materials and it occurred to me that this could possibly be mad of titanium, the trowel is heavy (relatively) and it didn't make the cut in my latest weight assessment because it's not "essential" and weighs too much. I'd love to see a titanium version of this.

The best!

I've used the alloy pocket trowel for years. I have a medical condition that requires me to dig a cat hole at least 2 times per day in the back country. This tool makes fast work out of digging cat holes, even in very tough ground. The handle is very comfortable and the stuff bag keeps my other toiletries clean. The hollow handle allows me to store emergency toilet paper.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the locking pin doesn't work very well. It gets stuck and is hard to push. I fixed this by replacing it with a plastic version I got from a pool supply store for swimming pool poles. This may become a problem if it breaks in the future. I'd like to see a better locking system or improved materials from S2S.

Small, light, works but rickety when assembled

Light, small and packable. My only complaint is when the handle is extended, the single push button that holds it in place creates a very rickety connection. Works, but makes the whole thing seem cheap and not well engineered as this brand usually is

Poor design

Right out of the package, the item is defective. The button that clicks the handle into place doesn’t work. Back to the store we go. So disappointed.
