The Suunto A-10 Compass has a minimalistic design, optimized for quick and efficient use. Featuring a high-grade steel needle and jewel bearing, it's balanced for the northern hemisphere and has a fixed declination correction scale. Insensitive to water pressure, the Suunto compass has a liquid-filled capsule that ensures stable operation and includes a detachable snap-lock lanyard for easy carrying.

Basic, but Suunto.

This is a Northern Hemisphere compass. Balanced correctly for use here.
While being a very basic model, this is a trustworthy Suunto compass.
Most importantly, as soon as the plate is placed roughly horizontal, the needle smoothly turns to the magnetic direction. Some cheaper compasses need some shaking to start spinning. This one simply works.
I do recommend the A-30 instead of the A-10, however. A-30 is just a few dollars more but its luminous bezel and magnifier make it feel more like a proper instrument. The A-10, on the other hand, while does the job as good, just feels cheap.
For gifting, don't get A-10.
For navigation, either A-10 or A-30 will do.
