Hate these shorts, regret buying them

Why do companies make shorts like this? They exist in that middle ground where all mediocre products live. Just a bit stiff, just a bit uncomfortable, seem to get dirtier than other shorts for no discernible reason. I like North Face usually, but these things suck.
