I researched backpacks for a while and this was exactly what I needed as a day pack and commuting. I even bought one for school for my son and he will have it for years. High quality fabric and pockets for everything you could ever want to store. Laptop portion is sturdy and spacious.

A good Backpack

It’s a really nice backpack but it doesn’t open up wide but my husband uses it every day. He’s a labourer and he needs something to bring his stuff in like his lunch etc to work. Usually stuff he uses doesn’t hold up very long but this pack is still in good condition and works for what he needed it for!

Well designed backpack that looks great too!

Mainly bought for carrying around a laptop and other office essentials. Stiff backing and cushioning leaves the laptop secure. Additional pocket locations are well thought out. Heavy duty zippers and tough material makes me confident that this will be in use for a very long time.

Great Quality Backpack from North Face

This is my second Recon backpack- the first purchased in 2007 is going strong but a bit tattered. Purchased this as my work/office commute bag, as the all black color is semi- professional. This version of the Recon is true to form for North Face. It is made of thick durable material and has a sleek look. Not too many extra or unnecessary exterior pockets and mesh to rip or get caught. The main compartment has plenty of space, but keep in mind some is taken by the separate laptop compartment at the back of the backpack. Also, one issue I have encountered is with the smaller exterior pocket (which in the picture has the north face logo on top) at the top of the back pack. It has plenty of sub compartments to store wallets, keys, pens. However, this pocket sits at the top 1/4 of the bag and if it's loaded the bag becomes top heavy. I find when I have keys, wallet, change, etc in the top pocket, it tips easy when rested on the ground/chari. Older versions of the Recon backpack had this pocket extending down the bag.

Awesome backpack overall

This is a great bag, and i got it onsale at sport chek which was awesome. The only thing I'd change is with the laptop compartment. Its the compartment that is directly behind your back. It should be able to open more, even if only 2" more on each side making it more useful for other things besides a laptop. If only used for a laptop it's great, but hard to fit other stuff in as it only opens enough for a laptop. Other than that small issue i think it's great. I wish they made a goretex backpack!

Good backpack, not really a hiking pack though

This is a good backpack, but heavy and not very breathable compared to other day packs meant for hiking. I use it for fieldwork but would never opt to take it on a hike based on its build. For fieldwork, it’s great. It has a laptop sleeve and is well made and durable. Lots of smaller pouches for organization.
