Thule Gateway Pro 3 Trunk Bike Rack

Good product, seems to have been well made, but unfortunately did not appear to fit my car (Toyota RAV4). I tried fitting it, and the top straps were pulling down on on the top trim piece of the tailgate. The rack is fairly heavy, and it's a little awkward to try and fit it without someone to help you. I was concerned that driving fully loaded with bikes would damage my vehicle. I took a chance when I bought it, because at the time I wasn't 100% certain it would fit a small SUV. I decided to return it, this particular rack is probably better suited for sedans.

No, I do not recommend this product.

arms that hold bikes

We've had this bike rack for about a year. It is fine for transporting bikes. But when we're not transporting bikes, we want the arms pointing down. One of the arms moves relatively easily when I loosen the clip that tightens it in place, but the other one does not even when the clip is totally loose. Sometimes I can loosen the arm by prying at the hinger with a screwdriver, but other times I end up taking the clip off and hammering on the bolt to loosen it. We owned an earlier version of this rack for many years--it was a little less robust but great to use.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Great Product - Instruction could be better.

Had been struggling to find a 3 bike car rack that didn't need a trailer hitch and would fit a VW Tiguan. Used the website tool to determine whether it would fit my vehicle and found it would so ordered it. Purchase and shipping tracking worked well and it arrived about a week later at the post office. Got around to giving a try to install it one week later. The instructions are not great particularly viz a viz the anti-sway support that is on one of the two bike frame supports and it folds down 90 degrees. Fortunately there were YouTube videos that set me straight. It is simple to install after the first time and holds the bikes firmly in place. I have 3 bikes with 56 and 58 frame sizes and it's plenty roomy. Highly recommend!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Simply the worst instruction booklet I have ever seen. No directions on how to access the Fit Guide. Bleh.

Hello Harry, Thank you for providing your feedback on the Thule Gateway Pro fit instructions. I understand your frustration with the lack of information on Thule.com. Our website is currently in the process of a large overhaul and update. Our online team is working hard to resolve the issue with trunk bike rack fitment information displaying correctly. In the meantime, please contact Thule Customer Support for assistance in fitting your Thule Gateway Pro to your vehicle.

Great features, easily assembled

I've been using my Gateway to carry an EZ Rider recumbent. None of the hitch mount carriers I've found can accommodate recumbent wheel-bases so this is perfect!

Horrible build quality, not fit for 3 bikes

What a disappointment this unit is. I thought it would be a sure thing because of the name (Thule) but I have learned that the brand is hype and the quality is substandard. The number of "hacks" I've had to add in order to make this work is unbelievable for a product that costs as much as it does. I've added felt to the trunk hooks because it was scratching my paint. I've had to use double ratchet straps because those cheap ratchet straps actually can come off while driving (which happened to me 3 times on the highway - scary!) And finally, I bought the 3-bike version because I wanted to mount, well, 3 bikes! But they are spaced too closely together and the handlebars need to be loosened and twisted 90 degrees in order to fit 3 MTB hardtails. Which frankly is very scary - make sure you re-tighten everything AFTER the bikes are on because their weight bears down on the unit and creates slack in the lines. I almost lost the whole thing once when I had 1 adult and 2 kids' bikes on there. Oh yeah, the mechanism that allows you to fold the arms down when you don't have bikes on it, is garbage. After loosening the knob to release the arms, they wouldn't unlock. I had to get in there with a screwdriver to attempt to wedge them apart, which of course gouged the plastic a bit. So now I just leave the arms out, even for storage and the darned thing takes up more room in the garage than it ought. And don't even waste your time calling tech support. I'm pretty sure they pawn you off to a third party - the gentleman I spoke with was pretty ignorant of the solution, a horrible listener and ended up offering no solutions at all after 30 minutes of me patiently explaining the issues (above). Yep, this is the last Thule product I ever purchase. I'm sure it was a great brand in the 90s and 00's but this stuff is cheap garbage. Might as well buy the crappy tire version and save a few hundred.
